Wedding Ring Recovered at Loon Point Beach, Carpinteria
Michael put his ring in his beach chair cupholder to keep it away from the ocean, then forgot about it. It bounced out during the pack-up.
Trying to be careful
Michael was cautious about swimming with his wedding ring on, so he took it off and put it in the cupholder of his beach chair — the safe option, or so it seemed. As the day went on he forgot it was there. When he and his wife packed up and headed for the car, the ring bounced out somewhere between their spot and the parking lot.
A search area that wasn't just the beach
They texted me early on a Friday morning. The tricky part here was that the ring could have been anywhere on Loon Point Beach or along the path up to the lot. Loon Point has a genuinely long approach walk, and that whole route had to be treated as part of the search area.
Third pass
I talked it through with the couple and focused on where they had been the day before. I gridded the area with the Minelab Manticore and quickly turned up a quarter and a dime — always a good sign that the ground is holding small metal near the surface. On the third pass I got a solid mid-tone. A couple of shakes of the CKG scoop and Michael's wedding ring came out of the sand.
What I took from it
The 'safe place' is where a huge share of my recoveries begin. Cupholders, shoes, towels, pockets, hats, cooler lids. If you have to take a ring off at the beach, put it somewhere that closes.
