Searching in Carpinteria
Carpinteria loses a lot of rings in the parking lots and on the paths, not just the sand — people take a ring off at the beach, put it somewhere 'safe' like a chair cupholder, and it bounces out on the walk back to the car.
If it went into the water
I search land and shallow water, and the tide decides everything. Tell me the time of day it happened and I can work backwards from the tide chart to figure out where the waterline actually was — which is often nowhere near where you'd guess. I've started a search at 3:30 in the morning because that was when the minus tide let me reach the spot.
What I bring
A Minelab Manticore detector, a long-handled CKG sand scoop, a pinpointer, and a methodical overlapping grid rather than a wander. On grass I cut small plugs that go straight back so the turf recovers without a trace.
What you can do before I arrive
Stop looking, and don't disturb the area. Raking sand or combing grass with your fingers relocates the ring — usually deeper and sideways — and destroys the one piece of information that mattered most.
