Lost Ring Recovery in Santa Barbara County

A county full of visitors

Santa Barbara County has a particular pattern: a very large share of the rings lost here belong to people who don't live here. They lose a ring on a Saturday and they're gone by Monday. That's completely workable — I've found a ring at West Beach for a visitor from Switzerland who had already travelled on to Newport Beach, then insured it and mailed it to her.

The pier area is barely detected

When I grid the sand parallel to the Santa Barbara Pier I routinely dig old coins. That tells me something valuable: this heavily used beach has not been searched properly in a long time, so a recently lost ring is very likely still sitting exactly where it fell.

East Beach and the hand-off loss

The classic East Beach call isn't a ring lost in the water at all. It's a ring handed to a friend or a parent for safekeeping, held in a hand, and then set down or forgotten when everyone stands up. That hand-off point is usually within a few feet of the ring, which makes these searches some of the fastest I do.
